Intention

`Intention

by Kim Eggleston

The universe provides, right? Fake-spiritual people like to say that, and while I'm usually more of a cynic, in this case I have to admit: Someone up there must be looking out for me.

Boxes

Writer's Notes:

Sorry for the prompt being a bit late! I had a hard time pulling my thoughts together on this one and ended up with a rather short story. Hope everyone enjoys.

* * *

The cemetery yard had emptied. Of the great crowd that had gathered, only Ken remained standing at the grave sight of his late father. Overcome with emotion, Ken began to weep softly. Reaching into his coat pocket, he pulled out his father's prized family heirloom, a small, engraved wooden box. The words 'Hopes & Dreams' were engraved on the top.

Cracks (Partial)

The house was silent, still as a tomb, as Serena sat at the kitchen table. Piles of papers were strewn about the flat surface, obscuring every bit of the tabletop. Serena’s shoulders slumped and her expression drooped. She was exhausted, and her eyes were puffy from crying on and off throughout the day. Her mom had been gone for nearly two weeks now, but going through all of her stuff--and how much “stuff” there was--kept reopening fresh wounds. She could work for a while in relative silence, just focusing on being busy, but then she’d spot some memorabilia that meant something and she would go to pieces again. She could never tell where the memories would come from.

Prompt 2: I Owe Nothing

The engraved wooden box had been in my family for generations and now it was mine.
I had a brief thought of casting it aside as I ran through the woods, but I soon favored the fact that even if I should, they’d just as soon kill me without it as well as with it. I didn’t mind carrying the box, it was no encumbering weight in itself. Being pursued for my life wasn’t quite uncommon anyway, so this wasn’t a difficulty.

Prompt Two Response: "Granddad's Box"

`
Worddly Prompt:

The engraved wooden box had been in my family for generations, and now it was mine.
I remembered it, from the stories I was told,
how it shivered and moved and motioned through time.

Prompt 2

With just the first writing prompt now behind us, I feel that it is pretty evident the enormous wealth of talent behind the writers of this community. Spectacular work, everyone!

And now, on to the second Worddly writing prompt!
The engraved wooden box had been in my family for generations and now it was mine.
This week's writing prompt was submitted by, Christopher Smith. The next writing prompt will be submitted Thursday, August 27th.

You may notice that this prompt has been submitted a little behind schedule. And with that in mind, I will take this moment to mention that there are no hard and fast rules to posting here to Worddly. If you're a bit behind on posting to a prompt – no worries, just post it when you can. And with that being said, we'll try and have the writing prompt on schedule next time!

Onward, then! Happy writing, everyone!
